Offboarding is an important part of the employee experience. A clear process protects the organisation, supports a respectful handover and gives the departing employee a better final impression of the workplace.
Confirm the essentials early
Record the agreed last working date, reporting responsibilities, required documents, equipment and access changes. Give the employee a clear contact person for questions rather than making them chase several teams.
Plan the handover around real work
Identify tasks, clients, files, approvals and relationships that need a new owner. A useful handover is specific: what is unfinished, what is due next and where the relevant information can be found.
Review access and records
Coordinate HR, IT and the employee’s manager to remove or change access at the appropriate time. Keep necessary employment records securely and update the employee status in the authorised HR record.
Good offboarding is not only a checklist. It is a clear, considerate process that avoids confusion for the employee and the team left behind.
